An Old Family Photo

Mother treasures many photographs that record my sweet childhoodmemories. I like them very much. I often look at these pictures, they remind me of the years that have passed. I particularly cherish one taken nearly twenty years ago, in the year 1986, when I was only two years old. In this picture, my mother is standing on the left, with her hand over my shoulder, father is sitting in the middle, and I am on the right playing the accordion. The accordion is the first music instrument I played. I have tried many new instruments as I grew older, the saxophone, flute, piano and the Chinese zheng, but I loved my toy accordion most of all. It has filled my childhood with fun and joy. The most remarkable things about this picture are perhaps my special hairdo, a ponytail pointing upwards, and I staring at the camera with my dark round eyes.

This picture was taken at my grandparents’ flat house, which is now gone. The house, along with other old structures has been taken over by new buildings, bridges and roads after twenty years. I still remember the guava tree that bore sour fruit in my grandmother’s yard, the shabby kitchen in which we made dumplings during Spring Festival, the kind neighbors, and the naughty kids I played with in the yard. How I miss them all, now that I have moved into a tall building at the city center. The living conditions have been improved, but the smell of guava tree and laughter of my grandmother is gone forever. On the wall of the picture there is a calendar with a man and horse hanging, how time flies! My parents looked very young in the picture. I have grown up and my parents have grown old.

Now I have become a college student, accumulating knowledge. I learned and value the slogan “Advancing with time”. Life reflected by the picture has changed dramatically, living standards of the Chinese people have been much enhanced under reform and opening up policy. Yet we must not forget the past. Without hard work, we wouldn’t have today’s happy life. This is the reason why, I, like my mother, love this old family photo very much.
