Celebrity endorsements work to increase a product's sales by encouraging consumers to make a positive connection between a person the public trusts and admires, and the brand up for sale. Companies take this sort of association one step further with the product tie-in. Product tie-ins are a creative way of linking a glamorous product with a less attractive one in the hope that some of the excitement surrounding the one will spread to the other.
Blockbuster movies are a common site of product tie-ins, with everything from soft drinks to video games becoming more desirable when the logos of popular films appear on their packages. Companies try to gain even more attention by placing the tie-ins in unexpected places. Family Mart, for example, benefited from the hit film Hero by wrapping bian-dang with photos featuring the movie's stars. The surprise of seeing common lunch boxes linked with the spectacular Chinese epic made many consumers look twice—and buy the product.
